Black Beauty, 1994
This adaptation of Anna Sewell’s classic tale tells the story of Black Beauty, a working horse living in Victorian England.
Along the way, Beauty forms friendships with humans and horses alike, and he experiences hardships common for a horse living in England in the 1880s.
Filled with drama and heart, this is my favorite film adaptation of one of my favorite horse stories.
Hidalgo, 2004
Hidalgo tells the story of Frank Hopkins and his paint mustang Hidalgo as they compete in an epic 3,000-mile-long endurance race through the Saudi Arabian desert in the 1890s.
Based on a true story, Hopkins was “a legendary long-distance rider,” and claimed to have won over 400 races in his career. Though the real-life Hopkins’ claims of this epic feat have never been fully substantiated, it makes a great story nonetheless. (source)

The Black Stallion, 1979
This film adaptation of Walter Farley’s classic novel follows the story of Alec Ramsey, a boy who befriends a magnificent black Arabian stallion after they are shipwrecked together on a deserted island.
After their rescue and return home, Alec enters his wild stallion in an epic champion horse race.
National Velvet, 1945
This classic film tells the story of 12-year-old Velvet and her adventures with the high-jumping horse “The Pie.”
Knowing The Pie’s potential, Velvet enters the horse in the Grand National, the biggest annual steeplechase race in England.
Secretariat, 2010
This “inspirational Disney drama” tells the story of the legendary racehorse Secretariat and his owner Penny Chenery as he competes in the historic races of the Triple Crown.
Seabiscuit, 2003
This exciting racehorse story is based on the 1999 book Seabiscuit: An American Legend. Seabiscuit is the story of an undersized Thoroughbred racehorse – an underdog who became a champion.
The Man From Snowy River, 1982

Featuring the music of Bryan Adams, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is the delightful animated tale of a dun stallion mustang who is captured and must fight to return to his herd.
Set in the 1800s, the movie deals with issues of western expansion, particularly conflicts between the Lakota people and the United States Government.
The Horse Whisperer, 1998
After a teen equestrian suffers a terrible accident with her horse, she and her mom seek the help of the “horse whisperer” on his remote ranch in Montana.
He attempts to rehabilitate the traumatized horse, and does his best to help the teen get back in the saddle once again. The film is based on the book by the same name by Nicholas Evans.
Champions, 1984
Champions is the true tale of British steeplechase jockey Bob Champion, who discovers he has cancer.
In “an extraordinary tale of survival and triumph,” Bob beats the odds – he survives cancer and wins the 1981 Grand National.
Ladyhawke, 1985
This 1980s classic introduced the majestic black Friesian breed to Americans everywhere.
In this dark medieval fantasy, a young thief (played by Matthew Broderick) escapes from a dungeon and befriends the mysterious Captain Navarre.

With an all-star cast and plenty of drama and hilarious antics, Something to Talk About is an entertaining romp with equestrian flair.
The Electric Horseman, 1979
Robert Redford plays a washed-up rodeo champion who rides off the Las Vegas boulevard and into the sunset with a stolen horse, pursued by reporter Jane Fonda – who desperately wants the scoop.
An avid horseman himself, Redford actually did all of his own riding for the film, and adopted his equine costar, a bay Thoroughbred named Let’s Merge. (source)
