War Horse, 2011

This award-winning Steven Spielberg film is based on the 1982 novel of the same name. In this drama, a bay Thoroughbred named Joey navigates an epic journey through World War I.

A cinematic masterpiece, War Horse is a “technically superb and proudly sentimental emotional drama.” (source)

Black Beauty, 1994

This adaptation of Anna Sewell’s classic tale tells the story of Black Beauty, a working horse living in Victorian England.

Along the way, Beauty forms friendships with humans and horses alike, and he experiences hardships common for a horse living in England in the 1880s.

Filled with drama and heart, this is my favorite film adaptation of one of my favorite horse stories.

Hidalgo, 2004

Hidalgo tells the story of Frank Hopkins and his paint mustang Hidalgo as they compete in an epic 3,000-mile-long endurance race through the Saudi Arabian desert in the 1890s.

Based on a true story, Hopkins was “a legendary long-distance rider,” and claimed to have won over 400 races in his career. Though the real-life Hopkins’ claims of this epic feat have never been fully substantiated, it makes a great story nonetheless. (source)

Something to Talk About, 1995

In this classic 90’s romantic comedy, Grace (played by Julia Roberts) moves back to her family’s horse farm when she discovers her husband’s infidelity.

With an all-star cast and plenty of drama and hilarious antics, Something to Talk About is an entertaining romp with equestrian flair.

The Electric Horseman, 1979

Robert Redford plays a washed-up rodeo champion who rides off the Las Vegas boulevard and into the sunset with a stolen horse, pursued by reporter Jane Fonda – who desperately wants the scoop.

An avid horseman himself, Redford actually did all of his own riding for the film, and adopted his equine costar, a bay Thoroughbred named Let’s Merge. (source)
