There are two types of names that most purebred horses have, a barn name and a registered name. Choosing a name for a Dutch Warmblood can be fun on both levels. To honor the horse’s heritage, you may want to choose a Dutch name for the barn name. We’ve given you over 200 options to choose from in this post!

With any breed of horse, the barn name is typically something short and to the point, a name that is chosen to fit a horse’s personality or color in some way.
The registered name, on the other hand, is typically longer and quite a bit more thought goes into creating it. For the Dutch Warmblood horse, there are some rules you have to abide by.
Let’s start, though, with my top 10 favorite names for Dutch Warmbloods.

Registered Names for Dutch Warmbloods
When it comes to registered names for your Dutch Warmblood horse, things can get a little more difficult. The KWPM requires that registered dutch warmblood names adhere to the following rules:
- Maximum of 20 letter positions
- Start with a letter determined by the General Board based on the year of Birth
- The name does not have a negative meaning such as being inappropriate or show a relationship with a person or group that might damage the reputation of the KWPN
While this may limit possibilities for a registered name, these rules have the added benefit of being able to tell a horse’s birth year, with reasonable accuracy, by just knowing their registered name.
Here is a list of the years and corresponding Dutch Warmblood name letter.
